
INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAM
JUST THE FACTS
​Around 25,000 youth age out of the foster care system every year in the U.S. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, more than 1 in 5 will become homeless. The majority of young women just out of foster care (more than 70 percent) will become pregnant by 21. It is estimated that 50% of aged out youth will develop a substance dependence problem. Only 6% of kids who age out of the system will attend an institution of higher learning and only 1 in 4 will even graduate high school or pass their GED.
WHY WE EXIST
Our mission is rooted in love and the belief that every individual, especially those facing the toughest challenges, deserves the opportunity to experience hope, healing, and a future filled with promise. We believe that every young person deserves the chance to rise above their circumstances.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
The Lotus Foundation offers a comprehensive range of programs for youth age 18-24, to help ease the transition from foster care to independent living, including housing, life skills training, job skills, educational support, and mentorship. We believe we can make a generational impact on the lives of these youth by equipping them with the tools they need to succeed.
LOTUS THRIFT STORE​​​
Providing the youth in our program job placement in our store is an important part of their life skills training, providing them with the opportunity to develop a strong work ethic and financial literacy. ​At Lotus Thrift Store, we offer a vast array of high-quality gently-used clothing, furniture, and household items. The profits generated from your generous donations help to provide financial resources to support the Lotus Foundation Independent Living Program.
